The Herbal Essences Sustainability Programme is Making Strides for Our Planet

OK, here’s the truth: the Herbal Essences sustainability programme makes mindful decisions to reduce our impact on Earth’s landfills and water supplies. Why?

So we can make Mother Nature PROUD. This is just the first step and we’re excited to continue our progress. For you. For the planet. For our products.

Little by little, a little becomes a lot.

#PlantForward

In addition to using naturally sourced botanicals certified by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, we are proud to partner and collaborate with many other global organisations working to help protect biodiversity and replant nature across the world. In 2020 – in partnership with Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank – we were able to seedbank endangered plant species from around the world: 60 between the US, the UK and Australia. In 2021, we are renewing the forest with The Nature Conservancy in the US and replanting native plant species with WWF Canada. In 2022, Herbal Essences has committed to donate funds to help replant 200,000 trees in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew – and to continue planting following Kew’s 10 golden rules for restoring forests.

Renew the Forest

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is working to restore and protect forests around the globe via its Plant a Billion Trees program.

In support of The Nature Conservancy’s efforts to protect more than 119 million acres of land and countless miles of rivers and streams, Herbal Essences will plant one tree for every purchase of two select products from our bio:renew collections Hemp & Potent Aloe, Mango & Potent Aloe, and Honey & Vitamin B, at participating retailers for two months between March 27th and May 21st. These efforts will help contribute to TNC’s ongoing Plant a Billion Trees program.

Recyclable Bottles with Recycled Materials

Herbal Essences bio:renew bottles are recyclable.

We encourage you to reuse these bottles or put them in the recycling bin. We're committed to continue to improve our packaging to make it more sustainable.

Reduce Manufacturing Waste

Herbal Essences manufacturing sites are working hard to reduce waste. How?

We achieved Zero Manufacturing Waste to Landfill and will continue striving to minimise plastic waste.

Renewable Energy

In 2016, as a part of the Herbal Essences Sustainability Program, we began purchasing certified renewable electricity credits—which come from windmills—for our Iowa City plant.

That means we’re adding MORE renewable energy to the electricity grid and LESS conventional fuels like coal, nuclear gas, and natural gas.

Green-e’s® program certifies that the Renewable Energy Certificates we purchase meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards established by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions. Since 2010, our Herbal Essences manufacturing sites around the world have reduced our total absolute energy by about 9% and total absolute gas emissions by more than 15%. We’re doing more so we can lessen our impact on the environment.

Water Reduction

We’re making a concerted effort to protect our planet's most precious resource.

From 2010 to 2016, our Herbal Essences sites around the world have reduced total absolute water consumption by over 20%—and that’s only the beginning.
